Most parents have some qualms when it comes to teaching their children with disabilities about sexuality and related issues. This workshop will address some of the myths about sexuality and disabilities, identify common concerns parents have, and provide a framework to guide parents in providing a meaningful sexuality education. Families will be introduced to a wide range of resources to support them in teaching their child about puberty, sexuality, and relationships.

Parents and Caregivers will:

  • Learn why it is important to teach children with disabilities about sexuality and related issues
  • Be able to identify a framework for teaching sexuality to their children with disabilities
  • Discover resources to support them in teaching their child with a disability about sexuality and related issues

SPEAKER - Donna Owens, M.A. • OCALI

Donna Owens, M.A., is the Program Director for the Family Center at OCALI. A special educator, she has worked in public schools, mental health agencies, residential and vocational programs and has served as a parent advocate and trainer for the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities. She was  a consultant to state special education programs in a seven-state region, directed a national technical assistance project for consumer-run family support programs, and presented at conferences for parents, families, and professionals at the national, regional and state levels. At OCALI, Donna has overseen the development of several products to provide support to families including the Ohio’s Guide to Autism Spectrum Disorders.
