According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and studies by organizations such as the Council for Exceptional Children and Autism Speaks, approximately 12–15% of students with Autism are enrolled in private schools or alternative placements. This is notably higher than the national average of about 9% for all students, suggesting that families of students with Autism are more likely to pursue non-public educational options. This trend reflects a growing desire among parents to find environments that better meet their student’s unique learning, behavioral, or therapeutic needs.
The Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship and the Ohio Autism Scholarship are substantial resources available through the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) for families of children with disabilities. To qualify for the Jon Peterson Scholarship, a student must have a current, agreed-upon IEP. The Autism Scholarship has a bit more flexibility: families can qualify if their child has an IEP identifying Autism, OR if they have a private Autism diagnosis and the school creates either an IEP or an Autism Education Plan (AEP) based on that diagnosis. Join us for a free webinar featuring Olivia Schmidt, Policy & Improvement Coordinator at the ODEW, who will walk you through everything you need to know about accessing these scholarship programs.
