Adapted Community Events

ASGA works with partners to adapt community-based programs to accommodate the needs of the Autism population and their families. This might include evaluation and adaptation of the space, program elements, and/or processes to accommodate sensory or communication needs, in addition to supporting the program with materials like a “Social Story,” small games to help with wait time, and navigational background information.

Visits with Bunny & Santa

ASGA works with partners to create a wonderland for children and adults who need a calm environment and support waiting to enjoy a visit with Santa and the Easter Bunny. Families attend the event and get their photos taken, have lite refreshments, and enjoy games and crafts with ASGA volunteers.

North Pole Adventure*

ASGA partners with the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to adapt this favorite community experience to accommodate families of living with disabilities. Adaptions include a separate ticket line for boarding, lights low, no music, an activity kit to fill idle time, snacks that support dietary needs, and a photo with Santa.

We’re Goin’ Fishing

Fishing can be an expensive hobby – purchasing a fishing license, rods, and bait. ASGA partners with the park system to create a unique family event that expands recreational interests, connects attendees with nature and provides an opportunity to try a new activity without having to purchase all the equipment. Each family receives an educational and fun activity kit to learn more about Ohio game life and the sport itself.

Ride the Rails

ASGA families spend time with the Northeastern Ohio Live Steamers in Medina. Kids (and adults) of all ages reserve time to enjoy a unique train riding experience at the Lester Rail Trail in Medina. Each miniature train section holds three to four people, accommodating 25 people per train on a ride approximately 15 minutes long. It winds through the meadow, woods, various miniature buildings, small bridges, and a station house. There are even railroad crossing signs at the various intersections. Afterward, families enjoy lunch and train-related crafts with ASGA volunteers.

Strike Up the Fun Bowling Event

Bowling is a great way to connect with other families. ASGA partners with a local bowling alley to provide a special price for attendees that includes two games, a shoe rental, two slices of pizza, and a drink. Families are strategically assigned to lanes to increase social connections.

Halloween In the Park

ASGA and Portage Park District partner to welcome individuals with disabilities and their families for trick-or-treating at Trail Lake Park. Community partners set up tables around the lake to hand out treats to the kids and information on local resources to parents/caregivers. Families receive a treat bag and enjoy decorating pumpkins and taking photos at Halloween photo stations. There is even a visit by Owlbert, the Portage Park mascot.
