Take a Break on ASGA is a program that our sister-affiliate, Autism Society of Oregon (ASO), launched in 2009. Given the emergency needs of families today, we are providing three hours of respite and a $35 gift card to Giant Eagle or Walmart.
ASGA decided to utilize reserve funds during the critical time of the Covid-19 outbreak to provide families with a little extra support. We believe these funds would be most beneficial at this time for parents/guardians who may need to go to the store, pharmacy, or just a walk. We also wanted to provide a cooking break, so we are providing a gift card to a grocery store.
Parent(s)/guardians (including foster parents) who are primary caregivers for children with autism (of any age) are eligible for the program. Fill out the form online, or download it and mail it to ASGA for processing. You can also scan and email it to ASGA HERE.
Once we receive the form, the gift card will be sent electronically or via mail as soon as we can process it.
Parents/Guardians are responsible for choosing and vetting their own caregiver. ASGA does not have a list of caregivers. At this time, several agencies providing waiver services have shut down. Your County Board of Developmental Disabilities (DD Board) Services and Support Administrator (SSA) may be able to connect you to caregivers willing to help. Call your DD Board and SSA for more information.
If you need help, call our Help Desk at 330-940-1441 x1. Other caregiver ideas may be your neighbor, teacher, relative, teacher’s aides or others in your circle of support (must be 18 or over). Choose carefully so you are comfortable.
Each family will need to weigh the risk of bringing in outside support. We recommend following relevant screening guidelines, such as not hiring people who have recently traveled, or have a cough or fever (100.4 is the magic number). It’s also important to protect everyone by practicing hand hygiene with soap and warm water, and offering hand sanitizers. Social distancing as best you can is also recommended. Families should review the American Academy of Pediatrics Ohio Chapter Family Resource Guide HERE.
Note: Please reference the GOVERNOR’S STAY HOME ORDER for more information. Staff who support individuals with disabilities are exempt as an essential Human Service.
After the respite care is provided, please mail the signed RESPITE CARE PROVIDER FORM HERE confirming services to ASGA for reimbursement (within 30 days). Checks are mailed directly to respite care providers NOT to the family receiving respite. The completed form can be mailed to ASGA at 703 S. Main Street, Akron OH 44311 or scanned and emailed to ASGA HERE. Please call our Help Desk at 330.940.1441 ext 1 if you have any questions.
