EDUCATIONAL WEBINARS
TAKING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN YOUR CHILD'S IEP RECAP

The Autism Society of Greater Akron would like to thank Clinton Householder, attorney from Community Legal Aid, for sharing his knowledge and experience of education law at Monday night’s webinar, Taking an Active Role in Your Child’s IEP. The IEP/504 Plan process can be extremely intimidating, leaving parents awash in data, assessments and measurable goals.

However, parents are, by law, equal partners on their child’s IEP team because they have intimate knowledge of their child’s strengths, struggles and development. WATCH THE WEBINAR

ENSURING A GREAT START TO KINDERGARTEN FOR KIDS WITH ASD RECAP

Thank you to Maggie Oliver for talking with us about how to ensure a great start to Kindergarten. Maggie’s stressed the need to establish a communication commitment with your child’s kindergarten teacher as soon as possible. This shows that you and your child’s teacher are dedicated to supporting your whole child---his/her triggers, routines, calming strategies, strengths, academic demands, etc.

Maggie noted that kindergarten used to exist solely for socialization and play, but today’s kindergarten is the first year of formal education with required core curriculum standards which can influence the next 12 years of a child’s attitude toward school and learning. Frequent, effective communication is key to establishing a parent as the most important advocate for his/her child. WATCH THE WEBINAR
