Four parents who have walked the autism journey into young adulthood convened for a panel discussion on November 18th to offer practical guidance for families new to the diagnosis. The discussion centered mainly around the emotions of the formal diagnosis, advocacy at school, adolescence, comorbidities and important self-care. Likewise, it was the shared day-to-day advice that families found compelling during the discussion: Parents know their child best—get a second opinion if you question a professional’s solution; Believe in your child’s potential; You are your child’s force---don’t give up; Take care of yourself; and Don’t live in the past and regret decisions or actions you thought were best at the time—you didn’t know what you didn’t know. A sincere thank you to our four parents who were willing to share their experience with others! | ||
So many parents cannot work outside their home because of their child's challenges. We urge you to send your comments to Medicaid to support paying parents to be providers, specifically as they relate to parents of minor children. Even if your children are grown, support parents who still struggle every day and send in your personal story!
Requesting Input for Appendix K Flexibilities The Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) and the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) are seeking your feedback on the flexibilities provided through the Appendix K authority, during the Federal Public Health Emergency (PHE). Prior to the end of the PHE, the State of Ohio must make decisions about which, if any, flexibilities to seek approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to keep permanently in the three 1915(c) waivers administered by DODD.
Therefore, ODM and DODD are asking for public input on which flexibilities were effective.
* The specific flexibilities provided by Appendix K include, but are not limited to,
The email addresses to send feedback are
ODM and DODD will compile all input for consideration and will share feedback through various means.
We thank our friends at the Arc of Ohio for this information!

From our Home to Yours: ASGA Holiday Recipes This holiday season, we’ll be sharing favorite family recipes, the story behind them, and why they are important to us and our family memories. Laurie Cramer, ASGA Executive Director "In addition to Autism, my son, Philip, has a lot of medical conditions, including severe food allergies. He is allergic to gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, and all forms of nuts. Yes, it’s a nightmare because he is also a picky eater (I’m sure that’s no surprise to most of you). But he loves these cookies, which fit with his fall birthday and only require one adaption, gluten free flour. I sent these to school and now send them to his day program instead of cake, which requires a lot more adaptions. I do not use the glaze, but sprinkle them with powdered sugar. They are always a big hit! Enjoy!" |

About the Autism Society of Greater Akron The Autism Society of Greater Akron's (ASGA) mission is to create connections, empowering everyone in the Autism community with the resources needed to live fully. Parent volunteers of children with Autism founded ASGA in 1987. With nowhere to turn and a lack of information and support, they started ASGA to share information, educate themselves about Autism, and learn how to advocate for better outcomes for their children. They also worked locally to bring awareness and understanding of Autism to the community. ASGA serves Summit, Medina, Portage, Wayne, and Stark county communities. ASGA is also a proud member of the Ohio Family Network (OFN), connecting people with disabilities and their families to local information and resources within their communities. We believe OFN provides opportunities to share ideas, find solutions to common challenges and inspire and strengthen each other |
