Caring Santa event allows children with autism, others with different abilities to enjoy a low-key visit

An event held on a Sunday morning at Summit Mall purposely didn’t include bright lights, ringing bells, holiday music or long lines.  In fact, that was the attraction for the families. The fourth-annual Caring Santa event, hosted by the Autism Society of Greater Akron and Summit Mall, allowed families with children who are autistic or with any different ability and their siblings to come to the mall before it opened to visit Santa and enjoy some holiday cheer.

New local autism survey reveals some surprises

A first-of-its-kind local survey of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their parents, we’re learning just how difficult it can be for someone with autism in Northeast Ohio.  The survey was conducted between July and October by the Autism Society of Greater Akron, an organization that’s committed to improving the lives of those affected by autism.

CDC’s Announcement of Updated Autism Prevalence Rates

Today, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced its updated report on the prevalence of autism, indicating the number of children with autism continues to rise. The current estimate is now 1 in 68 children under the age of 8 are diagnosed with autism in the United States each year.

Story Time for Xavier -
New monthly program aimed at kids with disabilities opens at the library

Xavier Stephens, 8, of Copley, feels the textures of bubbles blown by Tricia Twarogowski, branch manager of the Northwest Branch Library, in a new sensory storytime program at the branch on Saturday in Akron. The program, designed to engage children with autism disorders and differing abilities, offers educational, literacy and social opportunities to the children, their siblings and parents/caregivers.

Soap Box Derby Rolling Out Welcome Mat for Youth with Autism

Drum roll, please, for the International Soap Box Derby for bringing the Autism Society of Greater Akron under its tent.  “This partnership between two great nonprofits will bring more awareness to autism and those affected by it,” said Joseph Mazur, president, and CEO of the derby. “Kids with autism have always participated in soapbox racing and this partnership will further the awareness of this great family sport.”
