MARCH 30, 2020
And so the crisis continues, but for individuals and families living with autism, we are managing unique challenges that are far beyond what is being experienced by most people. ASGA is on the front lines with you, providing programs and support to help you navigate…together!
So what’s new?
STATE AND FEDERAL ADVOCACY
ABA SERVICES ESSENTIAL: We heard you! Working together as state advocates, we determined that ABA practitioner organizations are identified as an essential business; therefore, they are allowed to provide behavioral treatment services either face-to-face or via telehealth. Governor DeWine's Stay at Home Order makes it clear. Read the stay at home order HERE.
CARES ACT PASSES: By now you are aware that Congress passed a Coronavirus relief bill. What you may not know is that the Autism Society of America and its affiliates were actively working to ensure the unique needs of people with autism and other disabilities were considered as well. ASGA mobilized our network to call Senator’s Portman and Brown to ask for their support. READ MORE HERE about what the bill contained for people with disabilities. P.S. It’s not over! Keep a look out for how you can help by signing up for the Autism Society of America’s Ignite newsletter.
RESPITE & SUPPORT
TAKE-A-BREAK ON ASGA: We have already received over 50 requests for gift cards, along with multiple requests for financial support for respite. We are processing requests as fast as we can. If you need (and we stress NEED, as we have a limited budget and want to help those who need it most) these services learn more HERE.
We have also been busy asking the Boards of DD to gather names of individuals willing to provide respite if a family doesn’t have anyone they can ask. Call Wendy Cline, ASGA Support Specialist at 330-940-1441 x1 if you need help and she’ll connect you to the right person. Leave a message and she’ll call you back as we are still working remotely.
FACEBOOK COFFEE, TEA AND AUTISM: Social distancing meant many of you lost your CTA group. Please join us on Facebook for a virtual group to support each other along this bumpy road.
YOGA LIVE: Nicole is holding a Facebook Live Yoga class every Monday at 3pm and Thursday at 7pm. Grab the kids and get moving! You can also do past recordings. Good for the body and soul!
OPERATION CHEER: There are many people with disabilities living in Intermediate Care Facilities and group homes who are isolated due to COVID-19. You can help them feel a little less lonely by making a card or picture that includes words of encouragement as part of OPERATION CHEER!
Send to our offices at 703 S. Main St., Akron, OH 44311 and we’ll send them to our partnering agencies.
It only takes a few minutes to give someone a big smile!
APRIL, NATIONAL AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH (NAAM): We’ve got some fun activities (virtual) planned to interact and support not only your loved ones, but our community at large. Let’s do this! Stand by as we launch NAAM Thursday, April 2, World Autism Awareness Day! #AutismStrong
AUTISM PREVELENCE RATE NOW 1:54: The CDC announced that the prevalence rate of autism has increased to 1:54 children who are eight year’s old. Read more HERE ...
CAN YOU HELP?
ASGA’s mission is as critical as ever, and even more so, as we face unprecedented challenges in unprecedented times. If you can help us continue to deliver essential support, services, and advocacy, please consider a donation to ASGA.
With the current Stay Home order by Gov. DeWine, many people are ordering from Amazon. You can help ASGA at the same time by logging in to Amazon Smile and choosing Autism Society Greater Akron as your charity. It’s the same products, but ASGA receives a percentage back for your order. Please consider supporting ASGA!
