KEEP OUR STUDENTS SAFE ACTION ALERT

Contact your Representative in Washington TODAY!

The Keeping All Students Safe Act (KASSA) has been introduced in both the House and Senate by Representatives Bobby Scott (D-VA), Don Beyer (D-VA), and Donald McEachin (D-VA), and Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Patty Murray (D-WA). This bill would make it illegal for any school that receives federal funds to seclude a child or use dangerous restraint practices that restrict breathing, such as prone or supine restraint. KASSA would also prohibit schools from physically restraining children, except when imminent danger of serious injury to students or staff is likely.

Students with disabilities deserve the opportunity to pursue their education free from the fear of trauma and abuse. Please use this action alert to encourage your members of Congress to pass this important piece of legislation. SEND A LETTER TO CONGRESS

Disability awareness training OCTOBER IS NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH (NDEAM)

Held every October, NDEAM is a fitting time to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. The 2021 NDEAM theme is America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion.

NDEAM is led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), but its true spirit lies in the many observances held at the grassroots level across the nation every year. The Campaign for Disability Employment (CDE) encourages organizations of all sizes and in all industries to participate in NDEAM. Find ways to celebrate HERE.

TRICKS TO MAKE HALLOWEEN A TREAT FOR
KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Halloween can be difficult for individuals with a disability! "According to Dr. Victoria Winkeller, a Children’s Hospital of UPMC psychiatrist, preparation for Halloween, or any challenging situation, is key. Reading Halloween-themed books, sharing pictures of decorated yards and people in costume, trying on costumes and role-playing the social and physical aspects of trick-or-treating can all help.

“Prepare something ahead that’s appropriate for your child because you know best,” she said. “It’s a change of routine. There are new sounds and new lights, people in costume. It can be really overwhelming for a lot of reasons.” READ MORE

EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING SKILLS & AUTISM WEBINAR RECAP

Thank you Dr. Kerry Catanese from Total Education Solutions OH  for providing ASGA families with information on Executive Functioning. WATCH THE VIDEO

Dr. Catanese stressed that executive functioning skills develop over time and in sequence, starting at age 2 and ending near age 30. Close to 30-40% of individuals with autism are developmentally behind their peers, creating a lag in the natural sequence of executive functioning. Therefore, families must consider the developmental age of their child when practicing and reinforcing skills.
When attempting to strengthen executive functioning skills, Dr. Catanese emphasized the importance of the caregiver-child relationship, the family’s needs and the child’s strengths and vulnerabilities. Simple games, modeling, goal-setting and visual aides are several ideas that lay the framework for continued executive functioning growth.
