Letting Go and Moving On: Housing Options
Our society generally regards “moving out” as developmentally appropriate. However, according to statistics, 70% of young adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities never move out of their familys’ homes because housing is scarce and too expensive (EasterSeals, 2016).
No matter the complexity of an adult’s disability, there is a living arrangement to satisfy his/her medical, emotional, physical and social needs. Families are even custom-designing the perfect housing “fit” for their family member.

Participants attending this webinar will learn:
- Learn the general housing options available for different levels of ability.
- Consider the pre-requisites needed for an adult with special needs to live in a supportive environment, i.e., beneficial location, medical supports, independent living skills, and so on.
- Gauge the financial responsibility of each housing option.
- Recognize the importance of location, location, location.
- Discover non-traditional modes of housing for adults with special needs.

Jacquie Owens
Community Supports and Development Manager
Summit County Board of Developmental Disabilities
Jacquie Owens is a Manager in the Community Supports and Development Department at the Summit County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Her team works to connect individuals and their teams to supports and services as well as alternate services through building relationships with AMHA, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities and school districts across Summit County. She began working in the field in direct service with an ICFMR over 20 years ago to working in employment services, case management and microenterprises.
