Disability Policy Updates from DC

Advocacy and education are two core services of the Autism Society of Greater Akron, advancing our mission to connect the local autism community to resources that empower everyone to live fully. During the recent Disability Policy Seminar in Washington, DC, ASGA, in collaboration with ElevateDD, the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the Arc of Ohio, and other Ohio partners, met with elected officials and their staff to discuss key policy issues affecting individuals with disabilities and their families.

This recorded webinar captures a timely discussion on the priorities raised during those meetings, including:

  • Federal cuts to Medicaid funding and SNAP benefits
  • The optional status of Home‑ and Community‑Based Services (HCBS) waivers
  • The need to update SSI asset limits and eliminate the marriage penalty
  • Strengthening the role and recognition of Direct Support Professionals with the BLS and NLRB

Featured speakers Troy Hunter, President and CEO of ElevateDD; Stacey Maleckar, Superintendent of the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities; and Nathan Briggs, Executive Director of the Autism Society of Greater Akron, shared insights from their advocacy efforts in Washington, DC, lessons brought back to Ohio, and ways individuals and organizations can continue building momentum for meaningful change.
